Butter naan is a popular Indian bread that is typically served with various dishes such as curries, kebabs, or lentils. It is made from a combination of all-purpose flour, yeast, yogurt, ghee (clarified butter), and sometimes a pinch of salt and sugar. Here’s a simple recipe to make butter naan:
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon active dry yeast
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons yogurt
2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
1/2 cup warm water
Extra ghee for brushing
Instructions:
In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and ghee.
Gradually mix the ingredients together until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more warm water. If it’s too sticky, add a bit more flour. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Grease the mixing bowl with a little ghee and place the dough in it. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into equal-sized portions and shape each portion into a smooth ball.
Preheat a skillet or a tawa over medium-high heat.
Take one dough ball and roll it out into an oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch thick. You can dust the rolling surface and the dough with a little flour to prevent sticking.
Place the rolled naan on the hot skillet and cook for about 1-2 minutes until you see bubbles forming on the surface. Flip the naan and cook the other side for another minute.
Remove the naan from the skillet and brush it with some melted ghee while it’s still warm. This step adds the buttery flavor to the naan.
Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
Your butter naan is now ready to be served! You can serve it hot and enjoy it with your favorite Indian dishes or use it as a wrap for fillings like grilled vegetables or paneer tikka.
